Health, Fitness, Diet, and Nutrition Books

There are countless book out there on fitness and dieting, but fewer focus on just healthy nutrition.  Unfortunately, even fewer are aimed at busy, normal guys (i.e. not vegan, vegetarian, calorie restrictive, Atkins, etc.)

Some of my favorites are:

The Primal Blueprint

This is an excellent book by Mark Sisson that helps you design a lifestyle that balances health, nutrition, and fitness.  The focus of this book is to provide our bodies with the nutrition, exercise, sunshine, and sleep that our genes have been programmed for thousands of years to expect.  This book brought together many thoughts that I had floating around in my head, added many more that were new to me, and summarized everything to be easily understood.  I love that I am now living Primal and I’m feeling great.

The Men’s Health Big Book of Food & Nutrition

This new book was published in 2011, is well laid out, contains a lot of great photos, and covers the main health & nutrition points on a massive number of foods, drinks, herbs, and spices.  Basically, owning this book is a prerequisite for any man who wants to improve his diet, health, and nutrition efforts!

Want to know which teas you should be drinking?
What the healthiest cut of meat is?
Which beans, berries, or peppers you should be eating?
Or what spices to keep in your cupboard?
You will find it in this book.

The Abs Diet

The Abs Diet: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for LifeHealth, Mind & Body Books)

This is the first book that I read on diet, health, and nutrition.  I especially enjoyed the summaries in this book that talked about the different foods, drinks, and nutrients that help you to combat heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, etc. This book is a great start to learning about nutrition.

Foods that fight Cancer

Foods to Fight Cancer: Essential foods to help prevent cancer

After the Abs Diet, this is the second book that I studied on the topic of nutrition.  I especially enjoyed the fact that the only goal of this book was to educate you on the use of nutrients to avoid cancer.  This is a great primer on the biology / chemistry of cancer and the reason why some very common foods are very effective at avoiding it.  This book contains only common foods and I highly recommend it for your nutrition library.
