Oregano

Oregano is a wonderful perennial culinary as well as medicinal herb. It has long been recognized as one of the “functional foods” for its nutritional, anti-oxidants and disease preventing properties. The herb, whose name means “delight of the mountains” in Greek, is native to the Mediterranean region.

Health Benefits of Oregano herb:

  • Oregano herb is also known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.
  • Oregano is rich source of dietary fiber, which helps to control blood cholesterol levels.
  • Treatment of colds, influenza, mild fevers, indigestion and stomach upsets.

Oregano herb is rich in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin A, carotenes, lutein, zea-xanthin, cryptoxanthin and minerals like (potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium).

 

Dosage on using Oregano herb:
Tea: 1 cup several times a day. Powder: 0.5 to 1 dessertspoon 2 to 3 times daily with food.

Caution and Warning:
Though it is safe for most of the adults, mild side effects associated with the intake of herb are stomach upset, skin irritation, vomiting, and allergic reaction. Allergic reaction is seen in people who are allergic to plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family (e.g. basil, lavender, and mint).
